One of the things I found most helpful while going through the initial process of fostering to adopt was others timelines. Keep in mind, every state, every family, every case will be different. This is our foster/adoption timeline (in progress!) for the state of Iowa:
5/12- Discussed the prospect of beginning the foster/adoption process
6/14/12- Attended information session, submitted initial paperwork and fingerprints
7/12/12- Submitted additional background check information forms
8/10/12- Approved to start PS-MAPP classes!
8/16/12- PS-MAPP classes start
9/18/12- First home visit
10/1/12- Second home visit
10/18/12- Final PS-MAPP class
11/5/12- Third (and final) home visit
12/3/12- All paperwork and written homestudy due from Iowa KidsNet to the state DHS
1/24/13- Received our official license to foster!
1/25/13- First placement call- temporary placement for teen boy. (declined)
1/28/13- Second placement call- teen boy. (declined)
2/5/13- Third placement call- 4 month old girl, "Lovebug", temp placement. (ACCEPTED!)
12/18/13- Permanency hearing for Lovebug, TPR pretrial and trial date set for Feb. 2014
2/24/14- TPR (termination of parental rights) trial held
5/21/14- Special hearing due to information obtained during trial (info obtained prevented an order until this hearing)
5/23/14- Judge ruling- Orders TPR
6/2/14- Final visit w/bio mom
